Your guide to Nekselø

From cozy Havnsø, the trip goes by ferry to idyllic Nekselø, which is only 2.2 square kilometers, but offers unique nature, exciting experiences and great opportunities for wonderful hikes.

The entire island has been protected at the request of the residents based on this special nature, which has less rainfall and more hours of sunshine than the rest of Denmark. This means that you can experience a wide range of plant and animal species adapted to the steppe-like climate - including the rare bell frog, green toad and beach toad.

Just as you may be lucky to find among other things swamp nettle, hill coneflower and rose cattail.

Nekselø is very hilly with Gadebjerg and Elmebjerg as highlights - 41 meters above sea level. From here you can enjoy views of the island and Sejerø Bay.

From the east coast to the west coast, the dramatic nature becomes more and more pronounced. The east coast offers salt marsh and forest, while the west coast consists of steep slopes of up to 20-30 meters.

There are two signposted nature trails on Nekselø, where you can follow the green (South) or brown (North) arrows. Both routes are hilly, so it can be difficult to bring a stroller or similar, and dogs must be kept on a leash throughout your stay on the island.

There are not many permanent residents on Nekselø, yet in 1931 the island got its own church. It is built by architect Aage Herløw of cement stone and yellow bricks. The church is normally locked, but if you want to visit it, you can contact Jane Ørberg.
